I love being on islands and being separated from the mainland. I always felt that people living on an island are a living in a somewhat closer community and then potentially every other islander is a neighbour and friend. So in my first few days living on Waiheke Island I had to get used to even more English smalltalk than on the mainland. People don't only ask you how you are, but also tell you how cute your dog is or how lovely the weahter is or about any other of their latest anecdotes. It's funny.
